Ask about coverage

Keep the payment questions separate.

Start with the written quote. Then ask your insurer what it will pay. Before using money set aside in a flexible spending arrangement, ask its manager which expenses qualify; ask the same about a health savings account.

Ask the insurer about the proposed item

  • Is this exact product and this reason for treatment covered under my plan?
  • Is the proposed clinician in the plan’s network?
  • Does payment need approval in advance?
  • How are the visit, test and medicine charges split between me and the plan?
  • Can I have the answer and any conditions in writing?

If someone uses the word formulary, ask to see the plan’s medicine list. If they mention prior authorisation, ask what approval is needed before payment.

Being eligible for a plan to cover a medicine is different from a promise that the plan will pay.

Ask before counting reimbursement as money available

Put the written quote beside the insurer’s or account administrator’s answer. Ask what records are needed and which charges remain yours. Leave uncertain reimbursement out of a comparison until you have an answer.
