Compare care routes
Choose the conversation before the setting.
An in-person room, a video call and a written assessment are ways to have a care conversation. Compare what you can ask and what happens after the opening exchange.
| Kind of appointment | Ask before choosing | Clarify the next step |
|---|---|---|
| Visit in person | Who will assess me, rather than just describe the offer? | How do I reach that person after the visit? |
| Live remote visit | Can I ask my own questions during the call? | What happens if an examination is needed? |
| Reviewed online form | Who reads it, and can we ask follow-up questions? | How would I move from written answers to a conversation? |
Keep a way back into the conversation
FSMB (Federation of State Medical Boards) publishes guidance for medical boards. Start with your location at appointment time: ask the service which rules apply in that state.
In guidance reviewed September 17, 2026, FSMB says a clinician who needs further tests or a physical examination must arrange them or refer the patient.
Read note AAsk who arranges the next step and who explains the result. Write down how you will get that help after your first appointment.

Ask how follow-up questions will work
A live call and a form reviewed later can feel quite different. Ask how further questions would move between you and the clinician.
